Profit Beyond Displays

DATE:  Wednesday December 18, 2019

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Alan C. Brawn

We live in an era where many products and services appear to be the same and of equal value. This is especially true in the realm of AV, IT, and digital signage. This begs the question of how to stand out in a “world of sameness” and still make a profit. In this seminar we will explore the problem of commoditization and identify the elements leading up to it. We will confront the problems and suggest ways to address them. We will show the importance of adding value and discuss the Three Opportunity Phases of selling through understanding, collaboration, and problem solving. We will demonstrate how selling peripherals as a part of the original sale will not only provide added value to the customer but added profit for your company.

Integrating Mobile Devices in AV

DATE:  Wednesday January 15, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Jonathan Brawn

For years the commercial AV industry was limited to viewing a relatively limited amount of available information in the confines of a meeting room. With the internet and evolution from the PC to laptops, to tablets, and smartphones, the restraints are off and mobility is in. Herein lies the next great era of communication; the ability to receive information instantaneously and interactively on any device. This seminar discusses the realities of where we are today, the opportunities for the commercial AV integrator and practical suggestions for applications that we can employ in the systems we design.

Video Over IP: Signal Management in AV Applications

DATE:  Wednesday February 12, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Jonathan Brawn

Video over IP is a term used to describe capturing a standard video source (i.e. HDMI) and using a codec (coder/decoder) to convert the video signal into a digital bitstream, that can be carried on a standard IP network, as a stream of standard packets. This course details how this process is accomplished, the types of codecs, and standard protocols. The course covers applications and the unique challenges, compared to standard IP traffic that is not time-critical, similar to the issues encountered in voice over IP, but stricter in requirement.

Making Money with Managed Services

DATE:  Wednesday March 18, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Alan C. Brawn

We have all experienced the dwindling margins on the hardware that we sell. We have to sell more to make the same amount of revenue. For pro AV integrators to be successful (i.e. profitable) they must add value beyond the confines of something that can be delivered in a “box”. One way to do this is to provide managed services to your clients. In this seminar we will define managed services in pro AV and explore the applications that are a natural fit for these outsourced services. The course speaks about differentiation, sustainability, and profitability.

Commercial versus Consumer

DATE:  Wednesday May 13, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Jonathan Brawn

In AV and digital signage, our only constant is change. New advances become available each month, with brand new approaches, features, and benefits. Within the world of display technologies, an important battle is being fought by commercial AV and digital signage integrators who are faced with the need to justify the use of commercial grade equipment, in a rising tide of low cost, sleek, and continuously evolving consumer grade products. This course addresses the differences between consumer and commercial and when to specify each type of equipment for the project.

Audio: Addressing Practical Applications

DATE:  Wednesday June 24, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Alan C. Brawn

Going beyond the basics of audio theory, how to measure it, and what it fundamentally entails in pro AV, this course is intended for the next level of understanding. It covers several real-world applications that are most common to pro AV today. We will discuss videoconferencing, voice reinforcement and program audio technologies. The desired outcome is for the attendee to know the basics of design in these applications, core technologies, best practices, and where to turn for application engineering support.

Positioning and Selling dvLED

DATE:  Wednesday August 19, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Jonathan Brawn

When those in the commercial AV and digital signage industries think displays, we automatically think of a projector or flat panel. However, over the last few years, we have seen the emergence of what was once considered a fringe technology leapfrog into the mainstream. Direct view LED displays, both indoor and outdoor, have brought with them a new dimension in viewing for a variety of applications. They provide seamless images and feature high brightness and vivid colors with high contrast, that take size and impact to the next level. To understand direct view LED displays, we will explore the history of LEDs, how they operate, and specifications that are important in selecting, specifying, and selling direct view LED displays.

IoT, Automation, and Security for AV Systems

DATE:  Wednesday September 16, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Jonathan Brawn

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the new buzz phrase coming at us from every direction. It speaks to device connectivity and control as if it were new but the ability to connect devices has a long history in pro AV. The proliferation of IoT devices expands upon that. The “secret” in IoT is not the devices but the underlying networking and data technologies involved. In this course we will explore IPv6, wireless networking, Power over Ethernet (POE), and industry standards that are the key to seamless connectivity and communication. We will also discuss the all-important topic of security and the growing partnership between pro AV and IT professionals working hand in hand on a project.

Sorting Out Media Players

DATE:  Wednesday October 21, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Jonathan Brawn

There is much confusion in the industry about media players and the what is needed for digital signage deployments. This course begins with understanding what a media player is and what it does. We then look at the various types of media players and their specifications. Many screen manufacturers now have media players embedded into the display itself. Can these be a good choice for a media player, or is it generally better to utilize a separate appliance type of media player? This course sorts out the questions and provides clear direction on applications and what to use when and where.

Projectors Versus Flat Panels

DATE:  Wednesday November 18, 2020

TIME: 11:00am PT/1:00pm CT/2:00p ET

PRESENTER: Alan C. Brawn

As AV designers, it is incumbent on us to understand and then recommend the most appropriate displays for each application and as we all know, one size does not fit all. From the display perspective, many applications are turning to flat panels currently available up to 100”. While flat panels are appropriate in many cases, it is our task to look beyond the confines and limitations of a flat panel display and examine where projection not only fills the bill but may be a superior design solution for certain applications. The seminar provides clarity on when projection is the preferred choice and reviews key technical elements that support this position.
